A Pout Pout Fish First Birthday Cake

Since my little one was born in August of 2020 the pandemic was still in full swing when her first birthday came around. We decided to do an outdoor party in our backyard with a big tent. We lucked out and had perfect weather and everyone had a great time. For her cake I decided to make a three tiered pout pout fish birthday cake, but it was actually a “fake” cake. We had it on display at the party and then I made real cupcakes for everyone to eat.

One of her favorite books as a baby was Pout Pout Fish. I have actually lost count of how many different Pout Pout fish books we now have. The nice thing about making the cake a fake cake is that we still have it on display in our house. She loves to come in and look at it every do often, and I just haven’t had the heart to take it apart.

The cake was made by covering Styrofoam cake dummies in fondant which I then airbrushed. The little pout pout took a few tries to make but he eventually came out great! His fins were a bit delicate though. I used brown sugar to mimic sand around the base of each tier. I made some additional sea life like coral and jellyfish out of fondant as well. I had a mold that had sand dollars, seashells, and sea stars that I used as accents as well.

The best part were the gelatin bubbles I made for the top of the cake. Once dried they were really stable (five years later they are still in one piece on the cake top). There are a lot of great tutorials out there on how to make gelatin bubbles using balloons.

Hi, I’m Jen

After graduating from college in 2003 I went to work as a Chemical Engineer. My new job gave me the chance to travel the world and experience many foods and cultures I had never known before. I soon rediscovered my passion for baking and cake decorating. I would always bring back new ingredients and ideas from the places I visited and incorporate them into my cake recipes. Read More…
